Joss Whedon recently released a letter of thanks to his fans. As a fan, or as he refers to us- Peeps, it caused me to smile and laugh. Check out Joss’s full letter on his site whedonesque.com. Here is an excerpt. (BTW, go to the link and read all the way through the fake interview- hysterical)
“What doesn’t change is that I’ve had the smartest, most loyal, most passionate, most articulate group of — I’m not even gonna say fans. I’m going with “peeps” — that any cult oddity such as my bad self could have dreamt of. When almost no one was watching, when people probably should have STOPPED watching, I’ve had three constants: my family and friends, my collaborators (often the same), and y’all.”
Here is my Letter back to the incredible Joss Whedon.
Dear Joss,
Thanks for the thoughtful letter. I now consider myself to be one of the Whedon Peeps.
I have to say Joss, your unique style and fun universes makes it easy for a geek like me to be a fan or a Whedon Peep.
In the pre-Whedon geeky television days, watching a science fiction/ fantasy show was usually painful. Writers of these previous shows did not know how to balance the kool geekiness with character development and well written plots. Because of your great series Buffy, Firefly, Angel, and Dollhouse, we now have fantastic science fiction and fantasy television series on Network and Cable television. I don’t think Walking Dead or Game of Thrones would exist without the without the great work you have done.
Speaking of Firefly, any hope that you will join Nathan Fillion in the pursuit to buy Firefly and start it back up? I have heard you have come into a little bit of money recently from some movie.
Joss, you have also accomplished something of great note recently. It was commonly believed that no one could make a good group superhero movie. Many have said that it would be too difficult to bring the characters together, people would not know how to follow the movie, and the actors would want much more screen time. You blew away those false beliefs and created a fantastic top of the line movie that happens to be a superhero team movie. Being the highest grossing U.S. movie for opening weekend is the cherry on top.
As one of your Peeps, I have one last piece of advice, please don’t let your next television project end up on Fox. The loss of Dollhouse and (my favorite) Firefly is just too painful to relived again. I don’t want to become engrossed in a wonderfully written geeky kool show that will be killed way too early by Fox once again.
Your Peep,
Larry Litle
