The Purple Rain movie Soundtrack was released on June 25, 1984. This soundtrack was Prince’s next album after the 1999 album. It was a huge smash success. It sold 17 million copies and has been downloaded and streamed millions more times.
The album spent 24 consecutive weeks at number one on the Billboard 200 from August 4, 1984, to January 18, 1985, and more than 32 weeks in the top 10. When Doves Cry and Let’s Go Crazy both went to #1 on the Billboard charts. Purple Rain, I Would Die 4 U, and Take Me with U were all top 10 hits for Prince from the album.
This soundtrack took Prince to a higher level of stardom. He became one of the voices of the 80s and Generation X. If you drop the phrase “Dearly beloved, We are gathered here today, To get through this thing called life.” Any 80s kid/teen will follow it up with “Electric word, life, It means forever, and that’s a mighty long time.”
I, and most of my friends, owned this soundtrack. It was extremely KOOL and a bit naughty with some of the songs. We loved Prince and most of us still do. Now I am wondering if I can still find my cassette.
Rest in Peace, Prince, as we celebrate 40 years with one of the biggest and best albums of all time.
