We knew the writing was on the wall for this announcement. Last year Disney purchased the Star Wars Franchise and announced upcoming movies. They didn’t announce anything about the Star Wars Comics. But now Disney has just announced that they will not renew the contract with Dark Horse Comics for the rights to publish Star Wars Comics. The rights will revert to Disney owned Marvel Comics in 2015.
In the late 70’s and early 80’s, Marvel Comics had the exclusive rights to the Star Wars Comics. They often told out of continuity stories in the Star Wars universe. Many of the were fun stories meant for younger readers.
Dark Horse Comics took over publishing Star Wars Comics in 1991. They took a different approach to telling the stories. They were often darker and written for adults. Many of these stories were intriguing and written into continuity.
Will Marvel keep the same level of dedication and storytelling that Dark Horse has shown? This remains to be seen. But fans are hoping that Marvel takes Star Wars Comics to the same level if not the next when they take over the rights.
