The first Guardians of the Galaxy took the movie world by surprise. It is considered by many to be one of the best comic book/ superhero movies. I consider it in my top 5 Marvel movies. Could a sequel hold up to the original? Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 can and did.
Plot:
(There will be major spoilers– be warned)
The Guardians are hired by Ayesha, leader of the Sovereign race, to protect their priceless batteries from an inter-dimensional monster. They saved the day in exchange for Gamora’s homicidal sister Nebula. Rocket steals some of the batteries of the Sovereign because he could. This all leads up to the Sovereign trying to kill the Guardians and an awesome space battle with video game like sound effects. It ends with a man riding the top of a spaceship that destroys the Sovereign fleet.
The Guardians to crashing on a planet. This is were the story gets interesting. Peter meets his father. Yondu and his Ravagers show up working for the Sovereign. The adventure picks up to another notch. Before it is all done, the Guardians have to stand to save the Galaxy once again.
I enjoyed the plot of this film. It wasn’t complex. It was fairly straight forward but driven by being true to the characters.
What I liked: (More Spoilers)
This movie is packed with humor. Some of it is high brow humor and some of it is adolescent humor. Yes there is a poop joke in this movie but it isn’t a crude movie. I was laughing out loud much of this movie. It was well placed and not forced. It came naturally through the film. These characters just ooze fun and action.
This movie is about relationships. The characters are flushed out as we explore their relationships with each other. It dives into family relationships of sisters, father and son, and those that are family but not from blood. It reminds us what is really important.
The action is a part of the story but not the whole story. There are action scenes where the focus is on characters not in the fights. The battles is in the background. I love when a film does this. It is an action movie but doesn’t let the action dictate the story.
Kurt Russell was phenomenal in this movie. You want to like him and you want to hate him. He is fantastic in all areas. The young Kurt Russell was amazing looking. He is a wonderful antagonist for this film.
There are a ton of Marvel Easter Eggs. Everything from another Howard the Duck appearance to Stan Lee’s latest appearance. We see the original cast of first Guardians of the Galaxy comics from the 70s. This movie ties to the whole universe and gives us a peek at the future.
The end of the movie extra scenes where fantastic. Not all of them were important going forward but some were. Some of them were just clever and fun. They were all worth staying until the end of the movie to see.
I left this movie feeling awesome. I laughed and even shed a tear. I was entertained beyond expectation. I am excited to see this movie again.
What I not Like:
There isn’t a lot to dislike with this film.
Review:
I really enjoyed Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. It was fun and filled full of humor. It grew characters I am already invested in. Instead of going bigger and more explosions like most super hero movie sequels, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 chose to grow the characters and our understanding of their relationships. This movie is easily in my top 10 Comic Book movies and in my top 5 Marvel movies.
