I saw The Last Starfighter in the movie theaters in 1984. I remember thinking that it was fun and I loved the concept but also wasn’t as good as Star Wars. Some of the special effects weren’t great. I still enjoyed it immensely. The more I look back on it, the more I love this movie.
Over the years, it has become a cult classic. People realize the awesomeness of this movie even with some of its shortfalls.
According to Gary Whitta’s Twitter account, he has been working with Jonathan Betuel on a reboot/sequel to the original movie. Whitta is the screenwriter for both Rogue One and Book of Eli . Betuel is the writer of the original The Last Starfighter movie. Together they hope to bring a revision to the cult classic.
Whitta not only announced this project on Twitter but he posted concept art by Matt Allsopp. These images are beautiful. It has me excited for this project.
This is still in the beginning stages. There is no commitment for this movie to be made. But the Tweet and concept art has loyal fans of the original The Last Starfighter buzzing.
Okay, probably shouldn’t show you this so early but here’s a little something I’ve been tinkering on with my co-writer Jonathan Betuel. You might recognize the ships. Thanks to the amazing Matt Allsopp (lead concept artist on ROGUE ONE) for creating these images for us. pic.twitter.com/CIobLYYRHk
