LibraryCon 2018 started with a special panel on Friday night. They brought in author, Hope Nicholson, from Canada. Nicholson is a comic historian. She is the owner of the Winnipeg-based publishing house Bedside Press.
Nicholson presented and discussed the research from her book, “The Spectacular Sisterhood of Superwomen: Awesome Female Characters from Comic Book History.” It focused on the history of women in comics from the 1930s to 2010s. She brok down every decade. She gave insight into the female characters during each decade and the female creators.
Nicholson shared several fun stories and insights about various female creators. She talked about the formation of geek conventions and the influence they had on comics and how comics influenced them. Nicholson talked about the letter pages and how they were used to form some of the first newsletters and fan groups.
Nicholson had a sparkle in her eyes as she revealed and shared the research from her book. You could tell this research and information is important to her. It abundantly came across to the audience.
