18 and Life to Go~ Daughter Turns 18

My little girl turned 18 years old today.  I tried to be a good geeky dad and expose her to numerous geeky movies and shows.  I bought her comics.  I took her to geek/ comic conventions.  I did my part to let my baby girl develop her own way and her own geeky interests.

At one time, she was really into comic books like her father and grandfather before her.  I started her on some more children stories.  Once Supergirl came back into the DC Universe, she started collecting her comics.  I would read the comics and then let her read them in case she had any questions (also because I enjoyed them).  Later she wanted to read other comics.  I got her reading Captain Marvel, Ms Marvel, and Black Widow (name sake~ Natasha).  But after a while, she slowed down on her reading.  Eventually she told me that she hadn’t been reading the last several issues.  My heart broke a little that day when I realized my girl had stopped reading comics but I know she might come back to it when she gets older.

I took her to her first comic/geek convention when she was only 2 years old.  My buddy Chris and I took our daughters to Planet Comicon Kansas City.  We had a great time and managed to keep our daughters entertained at the same time.  It led to attending various conventions with my daughter over the years. We met Helen Slater, who played Supergirl in the 1980s movie, which was amazing for my daughter. She stopped wanted to go with Daddy to the conventions a few years ago.  Again, a little piece of me died but knows she might come back to it when she gets older.

The one consistent with my daughter is that she does love a a good geeky movie and television show.  She is always up for an opening day Star Wars or Superhero movie. She regularly watches geek shows like the Flash, Supergirl, and Riverdale.  She used to watch Dr Who with me regularly but when Rory and Amy were left, she left the series with them.

I did introduce my daughter to awesome world of parody and humor.  We attended a Weird Al concert back in the day.  A friendly security guard gave us back stage passes.  This lead to a huge check off of my bucket list by meeting Weird Al himself.  As you can see, my daughter captured his eye too.  I love the picture above.

My daughter turns 18 today.  She goes away for college in the fall.  I have done my best to educate and expose her to my geeky culture.  She may have left some of it behind but I couldn’t be more proud of her.  I love my Supergirl.

Stay Geeky!
