When my 18-year-old nephew visited and asked to see PUSS N BOOTS: THE LAST WISH, I was a bit surprised to see him wanting to watch an animated sequel so badly. He didn’t get to see it that time, so we all held the movie, unwatched, until his next visit. We did, however, watch the trailers of the first wolf scene and I then understood his excitement. That whistle! Those sickle!
PUSS N BOOTS is one of the best DreamWorks films to come out for a while. From the start, the cinematography—albeit animated—was intentional and gorgeous. The music, writing, and the voice talent were superb.
The themes of fear and death push the entire movie forward with every step filling us with a sense of dread and suspense. The humor, friendship, and love interest balance those darker emotions and provide kids relief and laughter; the porridge was just right.
After the nephew left, I ended up watching PUSS N BOOTS: THE LAST WISH again just for fun and I enjoyed it just as much as the first time. Maybe more. I love it when a sequel outperforms the original and PNB 2 rises to the level of TERMINATOR 2 and the few other sequels that were better than their predecessor. I would not miss this.
