Remember, Remember, the Fifth of November- Guy Fawkes Day 2024

Those of us familiar with the comic and the movie V for Vendetta will remember the fifth of November. It is a weird holiday for Americans because of the celebrated person. This  British national celebration is not the freedom from a government but rather the prevention of an overthrow of the government. The Fifth of November in England is known as Bonfire Night or Guy Fawkes Day. It is a big celebration with a bonfire and fireworks to remember when the overthrow was prevented.

On the 5th of November, Guy Fawkes led a revolt and a plot to blow up Parliament.  We think politics are bad in the U.S. but we don’t have a day set aside to remember a guy that tried to blow up Congress.  Well… not yet anyway.

It is interesting in 2024 it is National Election Day in the United States and it coincides with Guy Fawkes Day.  Let us hope we never have a day remembered for an attempt to blow up Congress.

The British had a kids rhyme to remember the events.

“Remember, remember, the fifth of November,
The Gunpowder Treason and plot.
I know of no reason why the Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot.”

Here is a cool video with Nick Knowles exploring the facts of the event.  I love stuff like this.  It helps us to remember, remember… well you get the idea.
