YellowJackets Season 1 Review

YellowJackets Season 1 Review

YellowJackets is a series on Showtime and Paramount+ with Showtime.  The first season is now on Netflix, which is where I watched it.

It is a thriller drama about a girls’ high school soccer team that crashes in the wilderness on their way to Nationals.  Think LOST mixed with Lord of the Flies mixed with a splash of supernatural thriller.

This series flashes between the girls in 1996 and some of the girls as adults in 2021.  The girls were found a year and a half after the crash.  There is a running mystery that dominates the series.  The adults will not talk in detail about their time in the wilderness.

This is an ensemble cast series.  Sophie Nélisse, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Sophie Thatcher, Samantha Hanratty, Liv Hewson, and Courtney Eaton are the soccer team from the 90s.  Melanie Lynskey, Tawny Cypress, Juliette Lewis, and Christina Ricci portray adult versions.

This series has a LOST feel with the time flashing back and forth and with the group being stranded.  There is so many unanswered mysteries, that also felt very LOST inspired.  The group rule of decision making definitely has a Lord of the Flies feel.

The acting in this series is top-notch in this series.  The adults and the “teens” all bring their “A Game” to this show.

What I liked:
This is a group of groups that are teammates but don’t all love each other.  There is a lot of posturing and maneuvering for leadership.  The girls also have to perform different tasks to ensure the group can all survive including hunting.

It doesn’t stumble away from the fact all of these girls have biological cycles like any teen girl.  There is an episode that discusses how they deal with that time of the month.

Some of the characters are not in a mentally good place. Some of this is from surviving a plane crash and seeing those that didn’t.  But there is the character who isn’t mentally stable even before the plane crash.

I didn’t recognize Christina Ricci until the end of the series.  She is amazing in her role as the adult Misty.  Samantha Hanratty is also incredible as the Teen Misty.

Review:
There is enough weirdness and mystery in this series to pull in the viewers.  We want to know what happened to the girls out in the wilderness. Who or what is the symbol?  Why won’t they talk about what happened?  Is there a monster or are the girls the monsters?

I loved the first season so much.  I found myself needing to watch the next episode.  After the end of the first season, I went looking for a way to watch season two and the upcoming season three.
