“Heroes, Villains, and Me” is a weekly article on Geeky KOOL about the world of comic books and my reaction to it. “Heroes, Villains, and Me” is not a comic book review article. I will write about current events, speculation and rumors, or my own wacky thoughts about the world of comic books.
I was thinking the other day about the various comic book series that I am reading. Here is my top 10 list. I am more of a Marvel and Dynamite guy than a DC guy. I have not read many of the New 52 titles so my list may not have your favorite. That is my disclaimer. Here is my list.
My father was reading Legion of Superheroes before I was born. I have come to love this futuristic super group. I have been enjoying this series since it was rebooted after Final Crisis: Legion of 3 Worlds. Paul Levitz is doing a great job writing Legion once again. The characters and their long histories keep me coming back to this book.
The new Captain Marvel (previously Ms. Marvel) is only one issue into the series but it made an impression. My daughter and I both enjoyed it and it has quickly made my top ten list. My daughter is extremely excited about this new series. This is her first Marvel series (she has been collecting Supergirl for some time).
8) World’s Finest
Here is a New 52 comic that I am reading and enjoying. The World’s Finest used to be a Superman/Batman team up comic book. This takes that concept and changes it. Earth 2’s Supergirl and Robin are transported to Earth 1 and they eventually take on new identities. Power Girl and Huntress (daughter of Batman Earth 2) combine for this super team up comic.
7) The Lone Ranger (Dynamite)
This series picks up after the Butch Cavendish conclusion in the previous Dynamite series. It is not quite as good as previous series written by Brett Matthews but it is still really good and a lot of fun. I am not usually a fan of Western comics but this is the exception. The issue that focussed on Tonto really solidified my enjoyment of this series and where it is going.
I have always like The Defenders. They were never the top tier group like the Avengers or the Fantastic Four. They took on the very unusual and strange. If a demon attacks the Earth or a giant machine that causes chaos, I would rather have the Defenders on the case than the Avengers any day.
These comics have always been fun. This current series is no exception. It is like watching a KOOL sci fi/fantasy action movie. Unfortunately, The Defenders are being canceled after issue 12– so sad.
Steve Austin, a man barely alive… gentleman, we can rebuild him. We can make him better than he was before. Better… Stronger… Faster…
I love this re-envisioning of Steve Austin. The first story arc was fun. It is really hitting its stride. This story is from Kevin Smith and is excels at awesome. The art is great and the story is so enjoyable.
4) Avenging Spider-Man
Avenging Spider-Man is a new version of the old Marvel Team Up. MTU was my second favorite book (only to Amazing) when I was growing up. I have always loved Spider-Man especially when he would team up with a different character every month.
Avenging is supposed to be only with Avengers but who in the Marvel Universe is not a former or current Avenger? Galactus maybe?
3) Here Comes Daredevil
I have really enjoyed this new Daredevil run. Finally, Daredevil is not always dark. He still has moments of darkness but most of the time this comic is pure fun. It has keep a fairly light hearted feel without losing plot or story. This is a well written series by the great Mark Waid.
It takes time out of the story continuum to tell fantastic one shot issues. The kids from the school for the blind stuck in the snow storm was excellent.
2) Legend of Oz: The Wicked West
What if Wizard of Oz took place in the Old West? It takes this concept and builds on it. Dorothy, her horse- Toto, and her ruby spurs and six guns attempts to find her way out of Oz.
This series has only managed 3 issues since last November but it is worth the wait. The writing and art are both sensational. More people need to find the back issues and get on the band wagon. This comic is a must read.
1) Amazing Spider-Man
This will not be a surprise to any regular readers. I LOVE Spider-Man. I love Peter, Aunt May, Mary Jane (better if they were still married), and the whole crew. I love the great history. I even like the bad and corny stories (always more good and great than bad).
I have always loved Spidey. Sometimes I love the stories in Amazing more than other. I LOVE the stories currently.
Dan Slott has been the perfect writer for Spider-Man. The stories are building and building. He is developing both Peter and the Web Head. The villains have been terrific. I can’t wait for the next issue. Love me some Amazing Sidey!
