Alterna Comics, an Independent publisher, is bucking the trend in the comic book industry. The trend is to print comics on deluxe paper. Comic companies have waged a battle on who has the nicest paper inside the comics. Alterna Comics will go old school and bring some of their comics back to newsprint.
Their newsprint comic line will debut in mid 2017. These comics will retail for $1.99 or less. Most comics cost between $3 to $5 an issue. Some deluxe comics cost even more.
I grew up with comics on Newsprint. Newsprint comics were the norm until the early 90s. All the comics from my childhood was all newsprint. Advancement in the coloring process and paper allowed comics to be printed on a thicker and slicker paper. It has evolved to the super deluxe that most comics are now printed on.
I never minded the newsprint. It has a special feel and smell. It tingled all of my senses. There was something comforting about that the feel and smell of newsprint comics. I do miss it. It is nostalgic and much cheaper.
If every comic I read was on Newsprint, I could afford to read more comics. There are a ton of comics I wish I could read but just can’t afford.
