In the 70s and early 80s, Atari ruled the home gaming console industry. They had a few competitors but Atari was the king of the consoles. Most kids would have been out of their mind with joy to have received the Atari Video Computer System aka Atari 2600 for Christmas 1977. It was the piece of tech to have for kids back in the late 70s.
Atari fell out of favor for Nintendo Entertainment System in the second half of the 80s. They haven’t had a new console since 1993. But Atari is back in the game or at least sort of in the game. Atari has revealed their new Ataribox to their fans.
The Ataribox will be released in the classic looking wood version and one in black/red. The box will have an SD Card Support, HDMI port, four USB ports, and indicator lights that glow through the material.
There are not a lot of details on this Ataribox. Atari stated that it will deliver some of the classic games in the Ataribox along with current content. They haven’t clarified what their current content will be. Speculation is that they will include their games like Rollercoaster Tycoon. There is no details on the specs or pricing for this Ataribox.
Will this be like the plug in NES that Nintendo released last year or will this be more. Will this be a workable new console or a fun way to relive our childhood memories? Only time will tell. It does feel good to have Atari back in the game.
