Over the last few years, I have grown very tired of the Major Crossover Events of the Big Two Comic Book companies. Often the events do not have any lasting effect on the characters and their universe. I have become frustrated with their gaping plot holes.
I gave up DC’s crossovers with Final Crisis. I have been reading comic books all my life but Final Crisis confused the snot out of me. I could not follow what was going on. I went back and re-read previous issues in an attempt to understand the latest issue but I was clueless. At one point, I thought I missed an issue but I hadn’t missed any at all. I know that Morrison can be a bit out there at times but come on. DC is not my main comic universe of choice so this was not a huge deal.
Even after giving up on DC’s crossovers, I have been gobbling up the Marvel major crossovers and any Spiderman crossovers (but not usually the X-Men crossover events). At the very least, the Marvel’s Major Crossovers have made some sense to me. The last several crossovers have started spectacularly. After a great 4 to 5 issues, I am let down. They seems to use a lot of plot devices and loopholes. The big battles at the end seemed contrived and not really spectacular. In short, the writers don’t seem to know how to end a miniseries crossover.
After last year’s “Fear Itself” poor ending, I swore off major crossovers completely. I told Stu, my comic book store guy, to slap me around if I request another major crossover. So far, I have stayed with that decision.
I have read enormously fantastic things about the Avengers VS X-Men Crossover from Marvel. I used to love the X-Men in the 1980s and early 90s. I have always enjoyed Captain America, Thor, and Iron Man in the Avengers. This sounds like a great concept for a crossover. Part of me is regretting my decision and stubbornness not to pick up the Avengers VS X-Men.
Should I talk to Stu and have him add it and pick up the back issues? Should I hold my ground since the ending might just disappointment more than not picking up this crossover? Should I wait until they put it in trade? What to do, what to do? Any thoughts from my readers would be appreciated.
