A federal appeals court ruled that the Batmobile is fully Copyright Protected. The ruling stated the Batmobile has a bat-like appearance and high-tech weaponry. No one can make a replicate a copy of the Batmobile without permission from DC Comics.
DC Comics’ lawsuit against Mark Towle prompted this ruling. Towle creates replicas of the Batmobile. He specialized in the 1966 and the 1989 Batmobiles. Towle sells the replicas for $90,000 each. He sold the replicas on batmobilereplicas.com.
This lawsuit focused on Towle and his business. But will it have more long term effects? Could an artist get in trouble for drawing an image of the Batmobile? We will see.
