I just read an interesting review of the book, Queen of Tearling by Erika Johansen, on the website, Hello Giggles. Queen of Tearling is a fantasy novel that takes place in a post-apocalyptic world from an environmental catastrophe. I haven’t read this book yet but I am very interested in it.
The story focuses on 19 year old Kelsea Raleigh Glynn. She has to journey to the Keep to claim her birthright and throne. Our heroine has to fight against great odds to come into her Queendom.
One reason this book is getting so much attention is because it dares to mess with the conventions of a female-driven fantasy novel. Heroine Kelsea is not considered beautiful, nor does she embark on a romance with any of the eligible male characters who populate the book. Her journey to queendom has absolutely nothing to do with her looks or her ability to attract a man, and that sets her apart from her scores of fantasy peers.
This would be progressive enough for a fantasy novel. But The Queen of the Tearlingdoesn’t stop there. Once Kelsea gains power, she becomes a champion of her people, in particular her female subjects. She works to stop human and sex trafficking and speaks out against domestic abuse. (Hello Giggles)
Emma Watson has signed on to star in the movie adaption of the book. This novel is the first book in a trilogy.
My 13 year old daughter loves books like this. I will encourage her to check it out.
