According to TMZ, Casey Kasem died this morning at 82 years of age. This is extremely sad news about an icon in the 80s and in geek circles.
As a teenager in the 80s, I spent hours each week listening to Casey Kasem’s American Top 40. Casey’s smooth voice would count down the musical hits to the number one song of the week. Who can forget the long distance dedications that often brought a tear to my eyes?
Casey’s fingerprints are all over the geekdom. Casey was a great voice actor for many iconic animated cartoons. Casey voiced Robin on the Super Friends. He was the voice of Shaggy on Scooby Doo. He was the voice of several characters on the Transformers including Teletraan I, Cliffjumper, Bluestreak. Mark from Battle of the Planets (G-Force) and Meriadoc ‘Merry’ Brandybuck in the animated Return of the King were also voiced by Casey.
