Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina returns for season 3 this week, January 24th.
If you haven’t yet binge watched seasons 1 and 2, now is your chance to catch up. This GeekyGirl has watched every episode twice… yes that is correct twice! As a fan of the comics and the Melissa Joan Hart, ABC .. TGIF lineup, I must say that this take on the characters takes a very dark turn.
Delving deep into the dark fantasy depths of witchcraft, satanic rituals and magic Chilling Adventures of Sabrina does follow the original basis. Sabrina is half mortal/half witch. But in this version she is being forced to join the Church of Dark and follow the Dark Lord even against part of her true nature.
Kieran Shipka, who people may know as her role of Sally in MadMen, portrays this dark version of Sabrina in a masterful way. Everything I have seen her in since MadMen lends me to the belief that she may have found her calling as an actress of the dark and spooky. She brings humanity and evil into a role that many associate with light hearted and playful fun. But you still empathize with her, you find the duality of her character intriguing.
Kieran Shipka would be enough to get me to watch the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina but she is joined with an exceptional cast including; Ross Lynch (of Disney fame) as Harvey, Miranda Otto as Aunt Zelda, Lucy Davis as Aunt Hilda, Chance Perdomo as Ambrose Spellman (a cousin) and Michelle Gomez as Lilith (and yes that would be the highly debated first wife of Adam.) and a black cat familiar named Salem although this one is less animatronic and doesn’t talk.
I have enjoyed this series. I find the dark macabre take on one of my favorite comics. So I know what I will be watching on my days of this next week!
