Actor Clarence Gilyard passed away yesterday at at 66 years of age. Details of his passing have not been released. His death was announced by the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) where he taught as an associate professor in the College of Fine Arts.
Gilyard had several well known roles during his acting career along with several minor roles over the years. Gilyard played naval officer Marcus “Sundown” Williams in Top Gun in 1986. He was Theo, the computer hacker and tech expert and friends of Hans in Die Hard. He was Private Investigator Conrad McMasters on Matlock. His best known role was as Ranger James Trivette in Walker, Texas Ranger.
Gilyard retired from acting and started as an associate professor at UNLV in 2006. He made the career change after he met his wife. They had children together. Gilyard regretted not getting time with this first two children. He was beloved by the students and fellow staff members. He was remembered for always having a smile and telling people that he was blessed.
He directed productions at the Nevada Conservatory Theatre.
