Both Helen and Carol are great pilots. They continue to push each other to be the best pilots. They are the head of the class in the NASA women’s training program.
When the ladies find out that the training program is being shut down, Helen reveals she needs to steal something back from NASA. She gave them a piece of technology to bribe them into setting up this program. Now she wants it back .Carol realizes this is the same tech that brought her to the past.
Since Helen does not know about Carol’s alterego, Carol remains in her early 60’s attire. They both fight their way through several security officers to retrieve the technology. But they soon found themselves surrounded. Carol flies them out with her powers and reveals herself to Helen.
Carol and Helen are jumped into the future. It is the time where Carol receives her powers during a confrontation with the Original Captain Marvel (Original Marvel Captain Marvel -not of Shazam fame).
Review:
Art:
I really loved the art in this book. The style is fairly modern when the ladies are flying the jets in the beginning. After the flight, the female pilots go to a bar in early 60’s attire, including skirts, and the art style completely changes. The art has the look of a 60’s romance comic. There are a couple of pages where the ladies are riding a motorcycle and it changes to a 60’s adventure comic. When Carol flies off with Helen, it feels modern again. It changes to a late 70’s/ early 80s comic when they witness the original Captain Marvel and Carol.
Story/Plot:
This entire series, so far, has been a tribute to heroic women. It highlights women who did things the world stated they could not do. Girl power is at its best in this series.
This story is extremely well written. It is one of the best written comics I am currently reading. This story arc has been fantastic.
My REVIEW:
This is the female lead comic that I have been looking for and sets the bar extremely high for all comics. DeConnick is a sensational writer and has hit her stride with Captain Marvel. Rios and Bellaire are fantastic with the artwork. This book is a pure joy for me and for my 11 year old daughter to read.
