Superstar comic book writer Brian Bendis has been on an Exclusive Contract with DC comics since November 2017. He was pulled away from the long time relationship with Marvel Comics to be a DC creator. He wanted to write Superman and he did.
DC Comics made a decision to no longer offer Exclusive Contracts for their creators. This means their creators could work for the competition either with Marvel, Boom, IDW, Image, or where ever. This also removed the higher pay rate they received per page. The Exclusive contracts used to give creators a guarantee to the top level characters like Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and Justice League. Now those creators have to fight for the privilege for a top flight character.
Bendis is no longer on an exclusive deal with DC. It hasn’t been reported if Bendis’ exclusive contracted was over naturally or ended early. This is a sign of changing times at DC. It is a signal that DC isn’t going above and beyond to keep their talent.
I will not be surprised to see Marvel follow suit. Both of the big two are in some financial constraints and have big companies in AT&T and Disney. Comics seems to be a second thought for these companies.
