Dick Clark, America’s Oldest Teenager, passed away today at age 82 from a massive heart attack (ABC News). I know some of our younger readers (anyone younger than 30) , may not know who Dick Clark was or why this is geeky news.
As an 80’s geek, I remember watching American Bandstand every Saturday to see what up and coming bands would be on the show. This was at the beginning of MTV and music video days so it was still unique to see bands preform on TV. American Bandstand showcased the latest dance styles which led to me emulating various styles at Junior High dances.
Dick Clark would play music and the teens would dance to the beat. He would often ask different teens their opinions of the music and performers. This is where “It has got a good beat but you can’t dance to it” originated (Thanks to Bryan for reminding me of that).
Dick also seemed to be in touch with what the various teenager thoughts about music and the various styles through out the generations. A spotlight performance on American Bandstand could make the careers of an upcoming artist/band.
Dick Clark touch the lives of many teens from the late 50s to 1987. I am singing the theme music in my head as I write this.
I will miss Dick Clark and what was his seemingly eternal youth back in the day. Rest In Peace Dick Clark.
His classic sign off from American Bandstand seems appropriate now. “For now, Dick Clark… so long.”
