A few weeks ago, Disney was asked if Princess Leia toys and accessories would be added to the Disney merchandise. Since Disney owns the rights to Star Wars, it would be up to them to add new Princess Leia Merchandise. At that point, Disney reps stated that they had no plans to add Princess Leia. But that has now changed.
Something magical happened after the original statement by Disney. Parents and pro-girl websites took to Twitter with #WeWantLeia to shine a light on the perceived need for toys and clothes featuring a positive and fun female role model like Princess Leia. This movement worked like a charm.
According to a Time article, Disney has changed their mind after the large response. Disney will be releasing new Princess Leia toys, action figures, clothing, and other merchandising in the near future.
Here is a victory for kids, parents, and geeks all over the world. If we see a need and bring it to light, people will pay attention to us. If we can get the attention of a company the size of Disney, then it will work with any company. Companies are starting to realize that geeks and nerds bring a lot of money to the table.
