During the panel for the television series Legion, show runner Noah Hawley announced the Doctor Doom movie for Fox. He is heading up the development of the new Doctor Doom movie. Having Hawley involved is wise for Fox with Hawley’s success for Legion.
Doctor Doom is typically thought of as a villain in the Marvel Universe especially against his rivals the Fantastic Four. At times, he has been an Anti-hero. In his heart, he is the hero and the other characters in the Marvel Universe either just get in the way or don’t really understand what is going on. Doctor Victor Von Doom is the sovereign ruler of country Latveria and rules with an iron fist for “the good of his country.”
Fox Studios have struggled with their Fantastic Four movie franchise. A Doctor Doom movie would take the franchise in a different direction. Many MCU fans hoped that Fox would let the rights to the Fantastic Four movie franchise go back to Marvel for a mutually beneficial deal. With the news of a Doctor Doom movie, this removes that hope for the Fantastic Four, the Silver Surfer, Doctor Doom, and Galactus to appear in the MCU. It would have been awesome to have them in Avengers: Infinite War but that was not to be.
For a Doctor Doom movie to work, the writers for Fox will have to figure out the character and essence of Doctor Doom. So far, they have failed in their previous movies to make a Doctor Doom that is relatable and that can excite fans. They have made a stiff version of a the character with little to no character development. Doctor Doom is one of the KOOLest and most kick butt villains in all of comics but we are yet to see that translate onto the big screen.
This movie will be a make or break moment for Fox and their Fantastic Four movie franchise. If this fails like the previous two attempts at the Fantastic Four, I cannot see them continuing futility. But if they can write a Doctor Doom movie that connects to movie goers.
