The The European Parliament of the European Union has firmly rejected the ACTA, the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement. The ACTA was Europe’s version of SOPA for internet security, anti-piracy, and intellectual property law. The vote was 39 in favor, 478 against, with 165 abstentions.
As like with SOPA, the ACTA would have given the government and companies rights to examine what private citizens do on the internet. The creators of Geeky KOOL are firmly against piracy and maintaining rights to ones own stuff. The record industry and movie industry should be upset about people pirating their properities. But saying that, these laws go way overboard and violate the freedoms of individuals in our opinion. That is why we stood against SOPA and any other future law trying to do the same thing. My grandfather used to say, “One should not fire a shotgun to kill a fly. You might kill the fly but look at all the other damage it does.”
This does look like a victory for democracy and freedom. Who knew Europe will vote for Freedom in time to celebrate Independence Day with the United States.
