Glynnis Johns, one of Britains great leading ladies, has passed away at 100. She is best known for her role in Disney’s Mary Poppins where she played Mrs. Winifred Banks, the mother to children Michael and Jane. She originally thought Walt Disney wanted to cast her in the role of Mary Poppins, and to make sure she accepted the role of Mrs. Banks he explained over lunch that he would make sure a song was written specifically for her. That song was “Sister Suffregate” which saw her chained to a lamp post. The Marry Poppins role earned her The Laurel Award for Best supporting Actress.
Johns Made her screen debut in 1938 in the Movie South Riding. Her career in film spanned from 1938 -1999. She won many awards including a Tony Award for her role in A Little Night Music. With the passing of Olivia DeHavilland in 2000, she was the oldest living Academy Award Nominee. She was also the oldest living Disney actor at the time of her death.
