“Heroes, Villains, and Me” is a weekly article on Geeky KOOL about the world of comic books and my reaction to it. “Heroes, Villains, and Me” is not a comic book review article. I will write about current events, speculation and rumors, or my own wacky thoughts about the world of comic books.
When Agent Coulson, actor Clark Gregg, was announced as one of the main characters in the Marvel Universe S.H.I.E.L.D. television series, this left many people scratching their heads. Agency Phil Coulson died in the Avengers movie. How would they bring him back? The speculation around the world wide web quickly became that the S.H.I.E.L.D. series would be a prequel to the Avengers.
It was announce this week this series will take place after the Avengers movie. It is a sequel and not a prequel. This will make it easier for other heroes (none members of the Avengers movie) to show up on this series as guest appearances.
This leads one back to the question, how can Coulson be alive and appearing in this series?
My theory from the start was that Nick Fury lied to the Avengers. This would not be a surprise at all. Lying to get what he needs is a normal piece of Nick Fury’s personality. After all, he is the head of super spy organization that lies to the public daily. We never saw Coulson’s body but assumed he died after his tangle with Loki. The bloody Captain America Trading cards were a perfect ploy to motivate the Avengers to take action.
There are numerous other ways to explain Coulson being alive. Some people were calling for Coulson to have his memories put in an android such as the Vision. He could have been brought back to life by one of the gods like Odin.
Heck, this is a comic book universe and Marvel enjoys killing characters to bring them back by some method within a year. Death has little sting in the Marvel Universe. Maybe a super villain replaced the real Coulson with a clone. Could that Coulson who died have been a Skrull duplicate of the real Coulson?
I am looking forward to watching the new S.H.I.E.L.D. series and discovering how Phil Coulson is alive and well.
