“Heroes, Villains, and Me” is a weekly article on Geeky KOOL about the world of comic books and my reaction to it. “Heroes, Villains, and Me” is not a comic book review article. I will write about current events, speculation and rumors, or my own wacky thoughts about the world of comic books.
The DC Universe continues to revamp and change old characters into their New 52. DC’s new Science Fiction comic book, Threshold, will introduce a new old character. Captain K’Rot bounces into the DC Universe once again with issue two and a full splash in issue three of Threshold. .
In 1982 (great year), Captain Carrot and His Amazing Zoo Crew was introduced. The Captain was a Superman like character in a world where animals walked and talked. It was a comical book geared for children. It had its niche and the stories were fun at the very least.
The Captain Carrot series did not have a long run. But it was influential on the nature of the comic culture. It demonstrated how comics could be fun and kid appropriate.
The new Captain K’Rot will be quite different from the classic Captain. He will not have superpowers but rather a gun wielding hare. He will not be child friendly character. Threshold writer, Keith Giffen stated “Every book needs a borderline psychotic, booze swilling, whore-mongering rabbit.” (via CBR)
Firstly, I usually love Keith Giffen. Ambush Bug is one of my favorite DC Characters. His run on Legion of Superheroes was sensational. But I am a bit perplexed why bring back Captain Carrot just to morph him into a want to be Rocket Raccoon (another character created by Giffen).
Part of me hoped Captain Carrot would be rebooted as his former self. He would be a great character to include in one of DC’s All Ages books. I would have loved to have seen what Baltazar and Franco could have done with him.
With so few all age characters in DC or Marvel, it is sad to see a long time child friendly character being transformed into this kind of character. But that is the world of comics we currently live in. Maybe the previous Captain Carrot will return some day. We will see.
