“Heroes, Villains, and Me” is a weekly article on Geeky KOOL by Larry Litle about the world of comic books and my reaction to it. “Heroes, Villains, and Me” is not a comic book review article. I will write about current events, speculation and rumors, or my own wacky thoughts about the world of comic books.
I am really pumped for the movie: Pacific Rim, which open on July 12. What is not to be excited about with this movie? Here is a movie with really awesome giant robots. The purpose of these giant robots is to take down monsters from beyond.
While I was geeking out over the latest trailer, I had a flashback to my childhood. As an avid comic reader in the late 70s and the 80s, I often picked up radom issues of different comic series. Shogun Warriors were one of those Marvel comic series which I would randomly pick up .
The Shogun Warriors were three giant robots that were designed to battle evil. The mammoth mechs were created by the Followers of the Light. This secret group was very mysterious.
Each of the robots were piloted by a specialists. Raydeen was controlled by Richard Carson, who was an American Stuntman. Combattra was driven by Genji Odashu, a Japanese test pilot. Ilongo Savage, Oceanographer from Madagascar, operated Dangard Ace.
The Shogun Warriors fought against several different bad guys. But as you can see above, they battled against giant monsters. All sort of creatures fought against the might Mechs. In the end, they were all three destroyed saving the world.
This sound extremely familiar. I don’t believe the Shogun Warriors had someone telling them that they were canceling the apocalypse. But it was glorious fun.
The similarities between Pacific Rim and Shogun Warriors doesn’t taint anything for me. In fact, it adds to the fun and geekiness. I really enjoyed Shogun Warriors as a kid and my expectations for Pacific Rim are gigantic.
