“Heroes, Villains, and Me” is a weekly article on Geeky KOOL by Larry Litle about the world of comic books and my reaction to it. “Heroes, Villains, and Me” is not a comic book review article. I will write about current events, speculation and rumors, or my own wacky thoughts about the world of comic books.
The internet has been completely a buzz with the news of Ben Affleck becoming the next Batman. I was completely surprised by this announcement. I wasn’t expecting DC and Warner Bros to make a casting announcement for some time. I thought they would bring in a little known actor to play Batman but boy was I wrong.
This announcement convinced me to change this week’s planned Heroes, Villains, and Me so I could give you my thoughts on my selection. But I had to contemplate my thoughts about this selection.
My first reaction was of horror. Did the casting director somehow miss the Affleck’s trainwreck as Daredevil? Daredevil was barely watchable and it has a lot to do with Affleck’s horrible acting in this film.
But this is also the same Ben Affleck of Argo. He was fantastic in this role and as the director. Argo won three Oscars including Best Picture.
Affleck has definitely grown as an actor since his portrayal of Matt Murdock and Daredevil. We know he can act and pull off interesting characters. But can he pull off the Dark Knight? Some actors cannot find their groove with action movies or sci fi. Can Affleck really portray a superhero correctly?
After much thought, I still feel extremely uneasy about this selection for Batman. But I also hated the selection of comedy actor Michael Keaton to be Batman back in 1989. Well, until I saw the movie. Keaton is still my favorite Batman. Maybe my gut reactions to the casting of Batman are not reliable.
We will have to wait until 2015 to see if Warner Bros made a genius selection in Ben Affleck or if the fears of the Geekdom will be realized.
