“Heroes, Villains, and Me” is a periodic article on Geeky KOOL by Larry Litle about the world of comic books and my reaction to it. “Heroes, Villains, and Me” is not a comic book review article. I will write about current events, speculation and rumors, or my own wacky thoughts about the world of comic books and related stuff.
Peter Capaldi recently announced that he will leave the British popular Science Fiction Series, Doctor Who. This will leave the role of “The Doctor” open for a new actor. The “New Doctor” not only looks different than the last Doctor but has a different personality. There will be a “New Doctor” with a new show-runner, Chris Chibnall, in 2018.
Many of you may be wondering what this has to do with the world of comic books. After all, “Heroes, Villains, and Me” is suppose to be comic book related article. I even stated it in the introduction. That is very true.
Do not worry. This post may be about Doctor Who but it is also related to the comic book world. But how is it related?
In my opinion, the next actor to be “The Doctor” should be Hayley Atwell. Atwell is a huge piece of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This would connect the world of Comic book movies and television to the Doctor Who Universe.
Hayley Atwell has dual citizenship with the United Kingdom and the United States. She grew up in England. Just listen to her wonderful accent. She attended the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. She has the background and the training of a great actress and to be “The Doctor”.
A couple of years ago, a fan ask Hayley if she would make an appearance on Doctor Who. Atwell replied that she didn’t want to be guest star or even a companion. She wanted to be “The Doctor”. That role will be available in the near future.
Hayley Atwell grew up watching Doctor Who. She is extremely familiar with this series. This is a huge deal with the fans of Doctor Who. They desire their Doctor to be a part of them.
Hayley knows all about fandoms. Atwell is Agent Peggy Carter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel fans were introduced to Atwell and her character, Peggy Carter, in Captain America: The First Avenger. She held her own with Chris Evans aka Captain America. Since then, she has appeared in three other Marvel movies. Her character appeared in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Atwell portrayed Peggy Carter for two seasons on Agent Carter. Fans know Hayley Atwell and she knows what to expect from fans.
Last Spring, ABC didn’t renew Agent Carter, much to our heartbreak. There was hope it might be picked up by Netflix but this didn’t happen. Hayley Atwell signed onto a new series, Conviction (which is a good show), but it has already received the ax from ABC. Atwell will be available for a new project and would be prefect for the next Doctor.
Historically, “The Doctor” has been male. He changes his look and personality with every “regeneration”. A fellow Time Lord (and arch enemy), The Master, regenerated into a female version known as Missy. There is prescient for Time Lords to change genders. Many fans believe Doctor Who is ripe for a female Doctor.
Speculation of a female “Doctor” is buzzing the internet. There is tons of speculation of who it might be the first female doctor. Most of the names being floated would be great choices. But there is no better choice for the next “Doctor” other than the beautiful, tenacious, and spite fire of Hayley Atwell.
