We now have the answer to the Spider Countdown on Twitter. Those numbers did have a fans wondering what Marvel was about to announce. The special announcement is superstar film/Television director, JJ Abrams, and his son, Henry, are writing (together) a Spider-Man 5 issue miniseries for Marvel Comics.
Abrams has written and directed some of the biggest science fiction series and movies. He is the director for Star Wars: The Rise of the Skywalker set to hit theaters in December. He is a Broadway producer for Derren Brown: Secret. He is in negations for a $500 Million partnership with Warmer. His list of accomplishments goes on and on. Add comic book co-writer to his list.
Abrams did have a job in a comic book shop in high school. The store had a copy of Amazing Fantasy 15 (first appearance of Spider-Man). Henry has been drawn to Spider-Mn since he was a kid.
“I did have a Marvel compendium when I was 6 or 7 that I adored and I would always land on this page of Spider-Man, not knowing anything about the character or the back story or the powers, but connecting with the visual designs of Steve Ditko. I didn’t really start reading him until I was 11 or 12. And at that point, I realized that this is a character that I see myself in and that was probably the first time I ever felt that way with any fictional character,” said Henry. (NY Times)
Sara Pichelli is the artist for this mini series. She is an Italian comic artist . She is best known for her art on Ultimate Spider-Man with Miles Morales. She is also well known for her run on Guardians of the Galaxy. Dave Stewart will color and is known for his art with Dark Horse Comics. Issue #1 will have cover art by
When asked about working with an artist, JJ stated, “And to get Sara’s artwork, the black and white early renderings, to get those, it’s weird because you’re suddenly looking at a brilliant artist’s interpretation of work that you’ve been talking about for a long time.” (NY Times)
This series will introduce a new villain to the Spider-Man universe. Cadaverous, the new villian, will cause issues for Spidey, Peter, and Mary Jane. There is no word on his/her powers or connection to Spidey, Peter or MJ. JJ Abrams stated,
