Marvel is referring to July 2013 as Superior Spider-Man Month. This is a new focus on Spider-Man related comic books this month. Look for Superior issues starting on Wednesday.
Last December comic fans experienced the end of the long running Amazing Spider-Man. It ended with Doctor Octopus taking over Spider-Man’s body and trapping Peter in Doc Ock’s dying body. Peter convinces Ock to be a good guy by sharing his memories with him. Starting in January, Marvel started the new series, The Superior Spider-Man with Octavius in control of Peter and Spider-Man’s body. Ock has the attitude (and often states) that he is a superior Spider-Man in comparison to Peter Parker’s Spider-Man.
Now there is a whole new focus with 3 new comic books. July will introduce the Superior Spider-Man Team-Up. This comic will replace the Avenging Spider-Man (I always hated that name), which was also a team up book. I hope it gets back to the feel of the old school Marvel Team Up with Spider-Man, that I loved in the 80s.
They are also introducing the ongoing series, The Superior Foes of Spider-Man. This is a Spider-Man rouge book. Usually villain focused books don’t last long unless you can quickly endear the readers to these guys. With Spider-Man being a huge jerk and extremely violent under Octavius, there may be way to play on sympathies for bad guys.
Talking about bad, the next book is about a real bad villain. Superior Carnage is a title of Venom’s more evil spawn- Carnage. Carnage is a cold blooded killer. Since they have found a way to redeem Venom, we will see if Carnage can be redeemed.
Will July really be superior for Marvel? It appears to be hanging on by a Spider Thread. We will see if these book will actual live up to the title of Superior or not. Personally, I can’t wait to get Peter back and get rid of the obnoxious Doc Ock controlled Spidey.
