I don’t think there was any doubt that the big three would reprise their roles. Earlier in the Week, Carrie Fisher confirmed her return to the Star Wars Universe as Princess Leia. Previously, both Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford had made comments about their desire to return. Today it is official. All three will reprise their roles. George Lucas announced this to Bloomberg Businessweek.
Asked whether members of the original Star Wars cast will appear in Episode VII and if he called them before the deal closed to keep them informed, Lucas says, “We had already signed Mark and Carrie and Harrison—or we were pretty much in final stages of negotiation. So I called them to say, ‘Look, this is what’s going on.’ ” He pauses. “Maybe I’m not supposed to say that. I think they want to announce that with some big whoop-de-do, but we were negotiating with them.” Then he adds: “I won’t say whether the negotiations were successful or not.” (Bloomberg)
I am extremely excited about this news. The idea of seeing a continuation of the original Star Wars saga enthusiastically pumps me up. I have dreamed about Star Wars Episode VII since ending credits of Return of the Jedi in 1983. I thought this would never happen. Yes, it will be a very different movie that I imaged in 1983 but having the trio back, makes it feel right.
I know many people who think this is a bad idea. After all, Harrision, Carrie, and Mark aren’t as young as they used to be. But their characters were as responsible for my love for this series as the writing or KOOL special effects.
For me, this the best news of the day.
