According to Space.com, we are now closer to a manned mission to Mars than ever before. They are projecting the mission date will be in the 2030s.
According to NASA’s Charles Bolden, they are making strides towards Mars. Part of the advancement includes a capsule called Orion and the Space Launch System (SLS) megarocket. The megarocket will propel astronauts into deep-space destinations. An unmanned test flight will go up in 2018.
The year-long space mission for the International Space Station crew of NASA astronaut Scott Kelly and cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko is a huge piece. This mission allows NASA to study the affects of a year in space both on the body and the minds of humans.
Mars Oxygen ISRU Experiment (MOXIE) is a device that pulls carbon dioxide from the Martian atmosphere and changes it into oxygen. The atmosphere on Mars is mostly Carbon Dioxide. With the MOXIE, astronauts will have oxygen to breath on Mars. They will have oxygen to help a rocket burn its fuel.
