According to Variety, Marisa Tomei has been cast as Aunt May in the new Spider-Man movies. Sony and/or Marvel have not confirmed this casting for the new movie series. The new Spidey film is due out on July 28, 2017.
I really like Marisa Tomei as an actress. She was phenomenal in My Cousin Vinny and Crazy Stupid Love. She is an Oscar award winning actress. I trust her to pull off almost any role. Almost any Role.
I said all of that, yet I hate this casting (if it does pan out to be true). Compare the images of Aunt May from the comics (at the top) to Tomei image above. Tomei is way too young and beautiful to be Aunt May. Aunt May is suppose to be frail and grandmother (stereotypical grandmother) like character.
I know, I know! I am a Spider-Man purist. I want him to have web shooters. I need him to look like a nerd and not some preppy skateboarder. I require Uncle Ben to utter the words “With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility” (Amazing Spider-Man totally bombed this). I also desire Aunt May to look like the Aunt May I have known for 40 years.
Rosemary Harris from the first Spider-Man movies was perfect. She looked like Aunt May. She had the mannerisms of Aunt May. She was 75 during the first movie and she was Aunt May incarnated.
I really didn’t like Sally Field as Aunt May at all. She didn’t look the part. she wast 66 years of age but didn’t look that old. She didn’t act like Aunt May from the comics (not her fault how the character was written). I kept waiting for Burt Reynolds to pick her up in a Firebird Trans Am. It was part of the new movies that didn’t work at all for me because I am a traditionalist and nick-picker when it comes to Spidey.
Will Marisa Tomei’s casting as Aunt May keep me from seeing the new movies? Not at all. Will it make me grimace and doubt this new movie? Yes it will and I will have a hard time with it. It isn’t sitting well with me. Maybe because I shouldn’t be attracted to Aunt May.
