I am sure Mark Hamill heard something like this in his head. “Use the Force Luke. Take the steps without a rail. The Force is with you always.”
Sixty-Three year old Hamill was filming Star Wars: The Force Awakens at a 6th century hilltop monastery on a remote Irish Island, Skellig Michael. Skellig Michael, is a Unesco World Heritage site.
The island has s 618 uneven steps cut into the steep rock of the mountain. During the climb to the top, Hamill slipped on the steps. An onlooker stated Hamill nearly fell to his death. He was saved by a Guide from the Irish Office of Public Works. The Force was strong with this Guide.
In recent years, two tourists have fallen to their death on these steps. The steps now have safety chain where to the two tourists fell. A safety rail was decided against because it would spoil the unique terrain.
Why were they filming on a Island with a 6th Century Monastery? Speculation has this site as Luke’s refuge and hiding place.
I am so happy that Hamill was not seriously injured or the third victim to fall to his death on the mountain steps.
