According to Cult Box, Matt Smith has stated he doesn’t want Peter Capaldi’s Doctor (Number 12) to have River Song around. He even told Steven Moffat about it.
As far as we know, River Song was the first woman to become the Doctor’s Wife (unless you count Queen Elizabeth in the 50th). He has had other love relationships and even burned up a sun to say goodbye. But never have we seen a woman take him to this level. The relationship between the 11th Doctor and River was unique and special. Is there any wonder that Matt doesn’t want to share that relationshiop with Peter Capaldi’s Doctor?
Smith joked at a Q&A panel at New Orleans Comic-Con last weekend: “I’m really possessive over Alex [Kingston]. I said this to Steven [Moffat]. I was like, ‘Listen, just don’t! Just not Alex. Anyone else, but don’t give [Capaldi] River.’ But Peter is the Doctor now so hey, what can I do?”
He added: “I think that Steven will be planning things that are going to unfold over years and I think he’ll reinvent the folklore, and it will become Peter’s folklore. But I am really proud of the fact that Alex was part of number Eleven’s life. My wife!” (Cult Box)
