My Top 7 Favorite Geeky Movies of 2015

Star-Wars-The Force Awakens

2015 was a great year for Geeks.  We had one awesome geeky movie after another.  Television never had so many great nerdy shows.  The number of well written and drawn comic books are at record high amounts. 2015 was a great time to be a geek.

2015 was the best year I remember for movies.  2016 promises to be as good if not better than 2015. There were so many geeky movies in 2015, I didn’t see all of them.  I anticipate my Red Box rentals will include them all.

Here is my list of my Favorite geeky movies from 2015.  Many of the geek movies of 2105 returned us to prior universes which we loved.

7) Kung Fury– This crowd-funded short movie was overlooked by many.  This 30 minute film packed in the awesome geekiness.  You can watch Kung Fury on Netflix or on Youtube.  Kung Fury is an awesome 80s action movie meets 80s Kung Fu movie meets an 80s Time Travel movie. Oh did I mention it also has a robot video game, dinosaur riding vikings, Thor, and a Kung Fu expert Hitler?  In other words, pure Geeky KOOL awesomeness.  Below is a description from the website.

Miami Police Department detective and martial artist Kung Fury time travels from the 1980s to World War II to kill Adolf Hitler, a.k.a. “Kung Führer”, and revenge his friend’s death at the hands of the Nazi leader. An error in the time machine sends him further back to the Viking Age.  (kungfury.com)

6) The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2– The final movie in the Hunger Games series.  It may have left some fans of the books unsatisfied but having not read the book, I really enjoyed the end of the Katniss saga.  This film reminds us sometimes the good guys are not always good and happy endings can happen.

5) Avengers: Age of Ultron – Marvel Studios continues to crank out excellent comic book based movies.  This sequel to the Avengers was a ton of fun.  AOU has even more heroes crammed into this film.  This movie was a fun ride with a ton of action and superhero fun.  But this movie was a bit confusing at times and seemed to cram too much in.  Even though it was 2 hours and 20 minutes already, it could have used another 20 to 30 minutes for pacing.

4) Ant-Man– When Marvel revealed their plans for Ant-Man, I thought they were crazy.  Ant-Man was a founding member of the comic book, Avengers.  Yet, he has been a “B” list hero if not “C” List character.  How do you make a high quality and entertaining film about a tiny hero?  Marvel pulled it off. This movie was fantastic.

3) Mad Max: Fury Road– The character of Mad Max returned to theaters for the first time in 30 years.  This film wasn’t a reboot or remake but a continuation of the adventures in a post-apocalyptic world.  This movie focused on Imperator Furiosa and her rescue of several young ladies.  Max becomes intertwined in this adventure by accident.  This movie was visually beautiful.  It was fantastic to return to this destroyed world.

2) Jurassic World– The return to the Park that started it all 22 years before. Now the park, known now as Jurassic World, is open and well attended.  The park adds new dinosaur attractions every few years.  Now they are creating new and bigger dinosaurs in the genetics lab.  An island full of people and meat-eating dinosaurs, what could go wrong?  This movie had the feel of the original movie.  Loved it!

1) Star Wars: The Force Awakens– We return to another universe with Star Wars: The Force Awakens.  TFA is a sequel set 30 years after Return of the Jedi.  The seventh Star Wars movie included familiar characters like Han, Chewy, Leia, and Luke but focussed on a new generation of characters like Rey, Finn, Poe, and Kylo Ren.

I went into this movie desiring just one thing.  I wanted to feel like I did when kid seeing the original trilogy for the first time.  I wanted that amazement and excitement. I wanted to be scooped away to that galaxy far, far away.  TFA did that very thing for me.  It wasn’t a perfect movie but my favorite movie of 2015.

Here are several movies that I wanted badly to see in 2015 but I wasn’t able to watch them in the theater.  All of these movies will be rented and watched in the near future.

The Martian
Terminator: Genisys
SPECTRE
Chappie
Tomorrowland
The Man From U.N.C.L.E
