For Gamers and fans of the books series, The Witcher coming to Netflix is huge. The casting of both Ciri and Yennefer have been highly an anticipated and revealed today. Anya Chalotra (picture below on left) has been cast as Yennifer. Freya Allan (picture below on right) has been cast as Ciri. They join the cast with Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia.
Let me tell you a little bit about these characters. Geralt of Rivia is our main hero. He is a a solitary monster hunter but often thinks the wickedness of humanity maybe greater than the monsters that he slays. Ciri is the princess of the Kingdom of Cintra and a daughter like figure to Geralt. Yennefer is a powerful Sorceress and Geralt’s main love interest.
Allan and Chalotra are fairly unknown to the general public. They both have some film and television experience. Freya Allan is known for her roles on The War of the Worlds, Into the Badlands and Bluebird. –(IMDB) Anya Chalotra is known for her roles on Wanderlust and The ABC Murders.– (IMDB)
There is some controversy about the casting of Anya Chalotra as Yennefer. Chalotra appears to be of Middle Eastern decent with her skin tone. Below is an image of Yennefer from the game. In the game and in the books, Yennefer’s very fair skin is contrasted with her raven black hair. Chalotra has the raven black hair. Some fans are upset that Chalotra was cast when she doesn’t fully look the part.
I understand that fans expect their favorite and important characters to look a certain way. I am guilty of this. I was a bit upset about Marisa Tomei (who I love) being cast as Aunt May in Spider-Man: Homecomings because she doesn’t look like Aunt May to me. She is much too young and beautiful to be Aunt May.
It is okay to complain that your favorite character isn’t what you expected them to look like for a live action adaption. There is a line this these complaints. Remember, the actor didn’t cast themselves as the character. You will cross the line when you sends hateful messages and tweets to or addressing the actors. When one makes racial slurs or implied slurs about people, you have step way past the line into a realm of ignorance. At some point, you have to put it to the side and still enjoy the movie or show about these characters. Sometimes an actor may not look like what you think the character should but they still grab the essence of the character and rocks the role.
My suggestion is to take a deep breath and just have fun watching these characters you love.
