Over the weekend, my eleven year old daughter and I attended Planet Comicon in Kansas City. We meet a lot of great people and had several fun conversations. I hope to discuss some of those conversations in an upcoming article. In this article, I will discuss the best conversation I had at Planet Comicon.
One of the guests I wanted to meet was Blair Butler. I always enjoyed her on the G4 Network (before Directv stopped carrying G4). She grew up in the Kansas City area. I thought would be good for my daughter to meet an attractive lady entrenched in geek culture.
As my daughter and I approached Blair Butler’s table, we were greeted with a giant smile. She was friendly and appeared glad to see us from the moment she made eye contact. Her sparkling personality drew us right in.
Right away Blair commented on my daughter being at Planet Comicon. She stated that it is great to see a young lady there. We had a small conversation about how important it is to have the fairer gender involved in comic books and geek culture.
We quickly started talking about the convention and all of the Cosplay. She was impressed with the Iron Man crew and all of the show they put on. We geeked out about the Lando Calrassian impersonator and how right on he was. Blair was as excited about the cosplay as I was. It was clear that she was comfortable with her geekiness.
I picked up one of Blair’s comic books, Heart. I had read about it previously but had not seen it in the comic store. I asked Blair what motivated her to write her own comic book. She shared a great story of her father getting her into comic books where she was a little girl. For a long time, she believed it would be fun to write her own comic book. She went on to tell me this story idea jumped out at her because no one is doing a MMA comic book. (I will be reviewing Heart later in the week)
She completely sold me. I had to have a copy of this comic book. Unfortunately she only had the first and last issues of the 4 issue miniseries. She suggested that I pick up the first issue with the alternate cover that will only be at Planet Comicon if I would like a comic. I took her advice. She helped me find a comic with no blemish. She asked if she could sign it. We had her sign the comic Heart #1 to me and my daughter. I think that touched her a bit. At the end, she apologized for some of the language in the comic since my daughter is only 11 years old.
In years past, I have met several stars. Many of them were nice but usually guarded. On an occasion, some stars were completely unsocial and appeared only interested in making money off of me. Blair Bulter was completely awesome and I never had the impression that she cared if I bought anything or not. She just wanted to have fun and talk about our geeky interests. I was already a fan but now I am one for life. Thank you Blair for a great time.
