COVID-19 virus aka the coronavirus has hit the United States and is spreading quickly. This has lead to the canceling, postponing, and suspending events all over the states. The NBA and NHL have suspended their seasons. MLB has canceled the rest of Spring Training games and will start the season 2 weeks delayed. The NCAA March Madness has thrown in the towel and they will not have any tournament games nor any conference to tournament games. Several movies are delaying their opening because expected low viewers in the theaters. Disneyland is shutting down. Colleges are extending their Spring breaks and switching to online classes. Comic/geek conventions are also being affected. Cities like Kansas City and St. Louis have instituted a ban on gathers of 1000 people or more.
Both Planet Comicon Kansas City and Wonder Con in Los Angeles have postponed their conventions for next weekend. Planet Comicon Kansas City wasn’t going to postpone as of yesterday but with the Mayor of KC calling for a ban, they are complying. They plan to wait until the last summer or the fall to have the convention but no dates have been issued. WonderCon is complying with California Gov. Gavin Newsom recommendation of postponing any public gathering of more than 250 people. No word on expectations for WonderCon to be held later in the year.
Never have we seen a virus take down our entertainment so quickly if it be geekdom or sports. We are living in an interesting time. We are hopeful and prayerful that this virus will soon dissipate and be just memory.
