I love the Princess Bride. The classic scene where Inigo Montoya confronts the 6 Fingered man, Count Rugen, is one of my favorite. Inigo delivered the memorable line, “Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die”.
According to Stuff.co.nz, a shirt with this quote caused a ruckus and upset passengers. Wynand Mullins wore a t-shirt with this quote on it for his flight on Qantas Airlines to New Zealand. Mullins had purchased this shirt at a Sci Fi Convention.
The flight attendant approached him about the t-shirt while other passengers were still boarding. Mullins didn’t have another shirt to change into. He hadn’t thought that this geektastic shirt would cause an issue on the flight. He didn’t have to remove the shirt for the flight after all.
“The flight attendant said to me: ‘Are you able to remove it because some of the passengers are quite intimidated by it’. I thought it was all a bit silly. The person next to me was laughing, because they knew the movie.”
Mr Mullins said he didn’t have another shirt to wear and hoped he would get to wear a pilot’s shirt – but wondered how the other passengers would then react to that.
The flight attendant left in search of another T-shirt but never returned – and didn’t make eye contact with Mr Mullins again. (Stuff.co.nz)
It is interesting how a simple t-shirt can make people so uncomfortable in today’s culture. Security at the airport must not have found it to be threatening or Mullins would not have been allowed past their station. Clearly this was a bad choice to wear for a flight. It was a case of a geek not realizing that we are still the minority and not everyone gets our humor. For me personally, I would love to own a copy of this shirt… but I will not fly in it.
