When J.J. Abrams was announced as the Director of Star Wars Episode VII, I was overjoyed. Here was a man grew up loving Star Wars. He has a ton of geek creed. I believed Abrams would taking over the reigns and would lead Star Wars over the course of the next decade.
According to Deadline, Disney has announced the writer and director of Episode VIII and it isn’t J.J. Abrams. Rian Johnson, writer and director of Looper, will be at helm of Episode VIII and maybe IX.
Rian Johnson is a fine writer and directer. I am sure he will do a great job. But he doesn’t have the status as Abrams. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing. But I am definitely not as excited about this announcement as as I was with Abrams.
