Dorothy Catherine “D.C.” Fontana has passed away last night at age 80. Her passing away followed a short illness. May she rest in peace.
DC made a name for herself with her science fiction writing including on Star Trek. She created the backstory of Spock’s family in her episode, “Journey to Babel”. She also wrote the Star Trek The Animated Series episode, “Yesteryear”, about Spock going back in time to save a younger version of himself. She co-wrote the Hugo Award nominated episode of Star Trek: Next Generation, “Encounter at Farpoint”, which was the pilot episode.
DC wrote for the Original Series, Next Generation, and DS-9. Along with Star Trek, she wrote episodes for many other shows like The Waltons, Bonanza, Babylon 5 and The Six Million Dollar Man. She was an amazing writer.
On Twitter, William Shatner called Fontana a Pioneer. She truly thrived in a time where female writers in television was an exclusive small group. Her stories will stay with us forever.
Rest in Peace.
