It is a sad day in the United States. Today is the first Saturday in over 50 years where no cartoons were aired over the air Networks on a Saturday morning. Last week the CW (last to run Saturday Morning Cartoons) aired their final episode of their Vortexx cartoons. Rest In Peace Saturday morning Cartoons.
I was a kid during the 70s and the 80s. We didn’t have the Disney Channel or Cartoon Network or Netflix. The only opportunity to watch cartoons was on Saturday mornings. This was a precious thing to me, my friends, and my sisters.
Saturday mornings were a time to get up really early so we could watch a ton of cartoons. We would pour a huge bowel of sugary cereal that was being advertised during the cartoons. I would feed my younger sisters so my parents could sleep in. We would run on sugar and pure excitement to see the next cartoon. I have such great memories of Saturday mornings.
I remember having to change the station to ABC between cartoons so me and my sisters could watch School House Rock. We would have for a few really KOOL School House Rock songs like “Conjunction Junction”, “Lolly, Lolly, Lolly” or “I am just a Bill.” We loved most of the episodes but some were special to us.
It is a sad day for me and my nostalgic mind. But I now can watch many of those same cartoons instantly on the Internet.
