That hot rumor of the day is that Hulu and Disney+ will soon merge into one service. Disney owns the Hulu streaming service. Members of the upper management of both Hulu and Disney+ have been leaving. This may be a design to downsize and bring the two services into one.
Last year, Disney finished buying out all of the owners in Hulu when they bought out the last 1/3 from Comcast. Disney has been running both streaming services since Disney+ went live last winter. There was talk about keeping them separate and using Hulu for the more adult themed series and movies. Now Disney may be reconsidering.
COVID 19 has devastated the movie industry and Disney is not an exception. They have lost a ton of money in 2020. Cutting the costs by merging the two companies could help with the financial bleeding. There is a huge Disney investor meeting coming up next week.
Currently Disney+ has 73.7 Million subscribers. Hulu has 36.6 subscribers. If you merge them together, you could have a streaming platform with over 100 Million subscribers. That is a number that could go a long way with subscribers. This would place Disney+ as number three in American streaming services only behind Netflix and Amazon Prime. Disney+ will have their sights on trying to catch Netflix.
This is on the heels of Warner Bros announcing their 2021 movies will go straight to HBO Max on the same day as they open in theaters. Disney has to be considering a similar idea by streaming their 2021 movies. If they merge Hulu with Disney+, then they are in a better place bring their movies to stream.
