Sid and Marty Krofft and their shows were a huge part of my childhood. Their creativity in creating wacky and fun series for kids was unreal. In 1968, they worked for Hanna-Barbera with the series, The Banana Splits Adventure Hour. With that experience, they created the bizarre world of H.R. Pufnstuf, a human dragon befriends a boy with a magic flute while trying to stay away from an evil witch. They created series like Sigmund and the Sea Monsters, Lidsville, The Bugaloos, and the Krofft Superhour. They also worked on shows like Donny and Marie and Barbara Mandrell and the Mandrell Sisters.
The most impact series for me was Land of the Lost. This series premiered in 1974 because NBC wanted dinosaurs in a series. It ran for 3 seasons. This series didn’t take place in the prehistoric past like many movies or series but rather in a pocket universe. This universe had a complex story with lizard people, Sleestaks, and science fiction elements, along with the dinosaurs. It focused on a father, son, and daughter lost in this land. It was my favorite Saturday morning show back in my childhood and still is as of today.
Congratulations to the 90 year old Sid and the youthful 982 year old Marty Krofft. I am so glad their work has been recognized for the amazing job in entertainment and unique programming.
