Marvel and Sony have been in discussions for sometime about how to bring Spider-Man to the Marvel Cinematic Universe while allowing Sony to maintain rights to Spider-Man and his franchise. The rumors have been sparking a ton lately. In this case, where there was smoke, there was definitely fire.
Today Marvel and Sony announced an agreement where Spider-Man will appear in at least a Marvel movie (most likely- Captain America: Civil War). Sony and Marvel will work together to roadmap the creative direction for Spidey in both the Marvel an Sony movies. The continuity will flow together. It is very possible that we will see other Marvel characters showing up in Spider-Man movies in the future.
With this news also came the confirmation that Sony and Marvel are going in a new direction for Peter Parker than Andrew Garfield. They are looking to cast a younger Spider-Man. Some rumors have Miles Morales (Ultimate Universe Spider-Man) taking over the tights but this is doubtful. The general public knows Spider-Man as Peter Parker and the odds are slim they would take a chance going away from that identity.
I understand the frustration that many fans have with changing actors again. But I never felt that Garfield was a very good Peter. I thought his approach to being in the costume was great. But he was too much of a pretty boy to be the nerdy Peter Parker. His attitude and acting never made me believe he was Peter. (Emma Stone was the perfect Gwen Stacy)
Sony plans on releasing the next Spider-Man movie on July 28, 2017. It will be co-produced by Kevin Feige of Marvel and Amy Pascal of Sony. They will work together to bring the best of both worlds.
