Spiderman: No Way Home Opening Night Review

Spiderman: No Way Home Opening Night Review

Since I celebrated my 57th birthday on Tuesday, my Fiancee and fellow GeekyKool writer Ashley Grant, got me tickets to the opening day showing of the latest Spiderman movie. Ever since Spiderman Far From Home came out in 2019, the follow up installment was eagerly awaited by Marvel fans.  How would the mid credit reveal of J. Jonah Jameson(JK Simmons) from the Sam Raimi “Spiderverse” be resolved

If anyone had any worries, you can leave them at the door, this is a great way to end the trilogy, while still allowing for further development in the future.  Every member of the cast had a storyline that had some emotional heft, this includes the villains.  Since this is a multiverse movie, we get reunited with Doc Ock(Alfred Molina), Green Goblin(Willaim Defoe), Flint Marko/Sandman(Thomas Hayden Church), Electro(Jamie Foxx) and Lizard(Rhys Ifans). Each Villain was given some costume upgrades that made them look closer to their mainstream comic book appearances.  Of course a multiverse movie means multiple Spiderman’s, and we aren’t disappointed as both Toby Maguire and Andrew Garfield reprise their roles as “Peter Parker”.  The audience response to both Toby and Andrew’s first moments on screen was one of cheers and applause.  While you could call them “fan service”, their scenes are way more than just a quick hit, to make fans cheer.  Both former Parker’s are integral to the third act, and their versions of Spiderman, get “closure” from their own movies, especially Garfield’s.

This movie doesn’t shy away from killing off a main character, but it handles it in such a way that it doesn’t seem forced or wasted.  Dr Strange, Ned and MJ all play large roles in this movie. As I said, “everyone has some sort of story arc”, no characters are “window dressing”.  there is both a mid credit scene and an end credit scene.  The mid credit one is short, but important, while the end credit one sets up the next Dr Strange movie.

This was a fun movie, and I will probably rank it as one of the better MCU films, and a great way to start off Phase 4.  Will Tom Holland step back into his spidey suit in a future movie, maybe, if not, he definitely brought credit to the role in all 3 films.

4 out of 5 stars.
